This is a very beautiful province which includes one of our best sport climbing areas, The Restaurant. This area attracts year round visitors from around the world. It has become famous for its good selection of good quality routes that are easily accessible. Manoutsa, not too far from the Restaurant offers multi-pitch traditional climbing. Overall this province has a large amount of rock with very little of it developed. Beware, certain areas do have maleria (The Restaurant is usually pretty safe though). It is also recommended not to drink from & often not even swim in most of the rivers. A club has started recently, call Paul Elliott on (0135) 656-5004 for more information. Most of the crags in this province are listed below with a brief description, star-rating and a few images. Please note that the images may not do the crag justice. Where the crag-name is linked you should find the online guide as well as more information on the area. Groblerz ** A little bouldering area between Bronkhorstspruiit and Groblersdal. It features some good problems on rough granite. Can be quite hot in summer.
Manoutsa/ Strijdom Tunnel *** Access is free here with the cliffs close to the car. The faces offer natural multi-pitch routes upto 6-7 pitches in a beautiful setting. There are presently 52 route descrptions online. The Hell *** This is a good trad area offering about 41 multi-pitch natural climbs, usually 4-5 pitches long. It is in a beautiful wild african setting, there are even a few crocodiles in the river. Access is very tricky however since it is on private property. Please respect the MCSA 's access requirements since they are the ones that have kept the access open over the years. Going to this property without permission could result in all climbing being banned in the area. The Restaurant/ Waterval Boven ***** This Sport Climbing area has 332 bolted & 99 trad (or partly bolted) routes with a good spread at every grade upto 33. It is a good area to visit all year round. There is still active development with new routes going up and plenty room for new lines, and even whole undeveloped crags. Some crime has occured, speak to Roc n Rope or locals to ensure a safe stay.
Wilgepoort *** Wilgepoort is the best winter single day, adventure crag in the Pretoria/Johannesburg area. The crag is located north-east of Bronkhorstspruit in Mpumalanga, situated in the Gouwsberg valley on the banks of the Wilge river, in a unique, subtropical middleveldt setting. The crag is approximately 110 metres high at its highest. Please first contact the MCSA for the latest access, it is 'delicate'. |
