This province includes the city of Durban around which you will find some excellent climbing areas. There are a few Climbing related clubs in the area including the MCSA Kwazulu/Natal Section , Univeristy of Natal Club. There are no indoor gyms due to the good climate and abundance of rock but the university has a good indoor wall. Except for the odd rain and humid conditions this province provides good all-year round climbing. In the Eastern part of the province the Drakensberg mountains also provide a bit of mountaineering and ice climbing in winter. Most of the crags in this province are listed below with a brief description, star-rating and a few images. Please note that the images may not do the crag justice. Where the crag-name is linked you should find the online guide as well as more information on the area. Delville Wood *** Sport climbing just outside the Shongweni reserve. Drakensburg **** A stunning range of mountains with a beautiful view. A few regions get some ice allowing for winter ice-climbing. Many peaks and faces can also be climbed - almost all naturally protected. The rock is scarcely good and great care must be taken. The vistas and setting make up for the poor rock.
Fernkliff ** A new bouldering area in Pietermaritzburg. Hilton *** Crag with new development in Pitermartitzburg. Howick Falls King Solomon's Mine ** A new bouldering area near Pitermaritzburg.
Kloof Gorge **** A really beautiful area with many crags spread out through the gorge. The climbs are mostly single pitch and mostly sport with a couple of natural routes. Take care a bit of crime has been reported here in some of the areas here.
Kranskop **** A mixture of short sport routes on some spectacular boulders and some natural routes in the sandstone faces. It is a lush green setting in summer and very picturesque. Access is closed, apparantly due to climbers not adhering to the previous access conditions.
Monteseel *** Over 300 routes can be found here being mostly natural, grades are moderate and the climbs are mostly single pitch. The MCSA has a hut above the crag, take care as there has been petty crime here. Oribi Gorge Shongweni ***** This reserve features some of the steepest rock in the country including the famous Wave Cave. The climbs are mostly bolted and of moderate to hard grades. The Magnetic Wall does feature some easier routes. Area presently closed due to crime, consult MCSA for latest access information.
