What the MCSA JHB section has to offer members! About the MCSA
The Mountain Club of South Africa headquartered in Cape Town is a well known national organisation of long standing founded in 1891.  Members of the Club are representatives of an organisation with a strict code of conduct in the mountains: many of the privileges enjoyed exist as a result of this code and the good reputation of the Club. The MCSA is affiliated to the Union International des Associations D’Alpinisme (UIAA).   This gives members benefits in Europe and other international destinations.

Several national events take place every year: an annual service, a dinner is hosted by a different section each year, a national ‘July camp’ in the Drakensberg and an annual international meet is organized in mountains somewhere in the world.  The club has mountain huts scattered around SA mountains for members use.

The Johannesburg Section is the second largest of 13 sections of the MCSA, administering its own activities and membership.   It sends out its own newsletter quarterly.  Resources are pooled nationally for an Annual Journal and the administration of other activities and events.

Outreach, Training and Development
Introductory beginners meets are held regularly at Strubens Valley, in Tonquani Kloof in the Magaliesberg, or at one of the number of sports climbing venues within a few hours drive of Johannesburg.   This provides a sound foundation in the skills required to climb safely, both on sport and trad routes.  The club has contacts with accredited training facilitators, many of whom are members of the club.  Weekly meets are held at sport and trad climbing venues.  These meets are held in local mountains, while long weekends allow for longer trips to venues further afield such as in Mpumalanga, Northern Province or Kwa-Zulu Natal.  Members meet socially each Wednesday night at the clubhouse for entertainment and to get details relating to the weekends activities.  The entertainment includes slide shows and video evenings, talks on snakes, flora, first aid and mountain rescue and other adventure activities.  Discussions are sometimes held on new techniques, bolting methods, rope technique, safety, etc.

Search and Rescue
The MCSA together with the Ambulance Service (Metro and EMTAC) is active in search and rescue for the public in mountain areas in South Africa. In case of emergency contact METRO CONTROL  (011) 315 0203

Expeditions and Overseas Trips
Various expeditions and overseas trips such as to North and South America, Canada, the Himalayas, China and Europe are organized and take place from time to time. The MCSA also helps send young climbers overseas to obtain further training in mountains with new and unobtainable experience locally (Snow and Ice). Deals with various international organizations allow MCSA members to benefit from special fees and rates in Africa and Europe especially.  Inquire at the Club.  Recent expeditions by the Club include Kuksay (Asia), Bolivia, Mt. Kenya and the international meet in 2001 to Spitzkoppe in Namibia.

Access and Permits
The members of the club have access to all the mountains in SA and the Club shares this access with the public through a permit system wherever the MCSA owns the land.  Inquiries for access can be made through the contacts above or the MCSA Access page on this site. Tonquani, Castle Gorge, GrootKloof and Mhlabatini are some possible areas to visit for non-members with a permit.
